Add statutory adoption leave

Work out if your employee is eligible for Statutory Adoption Pay (SAP), then add start and end dates so it's captured when you process your pay runs.

Add an employee's statutory adoption leave

If the employee is eligible, SAP can only be paid for a certain number of full weeks (GOV.UK website).

  1. In the Payroll menu, select Time Off.
  2. Click New, then select Statutory leave.
  3. Select the employee, then select Adoption.
  4. Choose if your employee is taking Standard adoption leave or Surrogacy adoption leave.
  5. Complete the date fields. Once you enter the leave period, Xero displays the number of weeks and days the employee is taking off.

  6. Select Yes if the employee's adoption pay is subject to pension calculations.
  7. Select Yes if the employee has provided sufficient documentation. If No, your employee won't be entitled to SAP.
  8. Click Add. Xero checks your employee’s entitlement, and whether they can earn SAP for this period of leave.
  9. (Optional) To edit the average weekly earnings calculated by Xero:
    1. Click the request you want to edit.
    2. Update the amount under Average weekly earnings.
    3. Click Save.
  10. (Optional) To override average weekly earnings where Xero can't calculate an amount:
    1. Click the request you want to edit.
    2. Click Override average weekly earnings, then add an amount.

  1. In the Payroll menu, select Time Off.
  2. Click the request you want to edit.
  3. Use the date picker to add KIT days to the Keep-in-touch days field.
  4. Click Save.
