Change many accounts in your client's chart of accounts at once

Change many accounts in your client's chart of accounts at once by exporting their chart of accounts file, modifying it, then importing it back into Xero.

Don't change the Code and Name columns at the same time

Don't change both the Code and Name columns at once for any accounts, otherwise Xero will archive those accounts and create new ones.

If you want to change both the Code and Name columns, export, modify and import the chart of accounts file twice. The first time, change the Code column. The second time, change the Name column.

You can change any other columns at the same time.

Change many accounts in the chart of accounts file

  1. Export your chart of accounts file from Xero.
  2. Update either the Code column or the Name column, and any other columns. Review the rules for preparing data in the import file.
  3. If you include balances in the file, Xero replaces balances already in Xero. If you don't want to replace balances, or are unsure, leave the Balance column blank.
  4. Save the file in CSV format on your computer, for example XeroChartofAccounts.csv.
  5. Import the file back into Xero.
