Retain non-Roman characters in bank statements

Change the format of your bank statement file to include non-Roman or non-English characters. Save it first as a text file in Microsoft Excel or as a CSV in Google Sheets, then import it into Xero as a CSV.

Use Microsoft Excel to edit your statement

If you save your statement as a text file in Microsoft Excel, it won't strip out the non-Roman (UTF8) characters. You can then import the text file into Xero using the CSV import process.

  1. From your internet banking, download the bank statement in CSV format.
  2. Open file in Microsoft Excel.
  3. Format columns as needed.
  4. Save file as Unicode Text (*.txt).
  5. Upload the text file to Xero using the CSV import process.

Use Google Sheets to edit your statement

If you don't use Microsoft Excel and have a Google account, you may want to try this option in Google Sheets.

  1. From your internet banking, download the bank statement in CSV format.
  2. Upload the file to Google Drive.
  3. Open the file in Google Sheets.
  4. Format columns as needed.
  5. From Google Drive, download your edited file as a 'comma-separated values' file.
  6. Upload the new CSV file to Xero.
