Manage the questions in a query

Add questions to a query. Order questions and group related questions together in sections. Update or remove questions or sections.

Add questions and sections

Ask creates new queries with one blank question and an untitled section. Each new section also contains one blank question. Enter the details for these before adding more.

To add a question to a query:

  1. Go to Ask and click the query in the list.
  2. In the section you want to add the question to, click Add another question.
  3. Enter your question.
  4. (Optional) Enter a tip to help guide your client’s answer.
  5. Select an answer type:

To add a section to a query:

  1. Go to Ask and click the query in the list.
  2. In the location you want to add the section to, click Add section.
  3. (Optional) Click Untitled and enter a title for the section.
  4. Add questions to the section.

Preview a query

You can preview a query to see how it will look to your client.

  1. Go to Ask and click the query in the list.
  2. Click Preview Image of the query preview button.
  3. You can only preview draft queries. Select the Draft query group to see a list of the draft queries.
  4. Click Next and Back to step through the query.
  5. When you’ve finished previewing the query, click Close.

Change the order of the questions

Once you’ve added two or more questions to a section, you can drag and drop questions to change their order. You can also drag questions between sections. However, you can’t remove the last question from a section or change the order of sections.

Edit a question or section

If your client hasn’t answered a question, you can change the question details once the query has been submitted.

  1. Go to Ask and click the query in the list.
  2. Select any unanswered question in the query and change the question, tip, or answer type.
When your client answers a question, Ask locks the question. This means you can’t make changes to it.

You can change the title of a section until it has been sent. Click on the current title and enter a new one.

Delete a question or section

To delete a question or section:

  1. Go to Ask and click the query in the list.
  2. Click the menu icon Xero HQ menu icon on the question or section you want to delete, then select Delete.
  3. If you’re deleting a section, click Delete to confirm.
  4. Deleting a section also deletes any unanswered questions in the section.

You can’t delete:

  • An answered question or a section that contains an answered question
  • The last question in a section or the last section in a query
