Troubleshooting fixed assets after 22 September 2015

If you used fixed assets in Xero before 22 September 2015, here are some common issues and how to resolve them. You'll need the Advisor user role to make some of these changes.

Can I delete an asset type?

No. You can’t delete an asset type, but you can rename any asset type you no longer use to something like Do not use. Remember, each asset type name must be unique.

Can I attach files to an asset?

No. You can view files that were attached prior to 22 September 2015, but you can’t attach new files.

Why can’t I edit or delete this asset?

If you used fixed assets in Xero before 22 September 2015, you may find that you can't:

  • Edit some fields of a registered asset
  • Delete a registered asset

You can make changes to these assets by rolling back depreciation, making the changes and then running depreciation again.

  1. Roll back depreciation on all assets to the month the asset you want to edit was purchased.
Roll back depreciation on registered assets
  2. Make the changes to the asset.
    Edit a registered fixed asset
    Delete a registered fixed asset
  3. Run depreciation back to the most recent month.
Run depreciation on registered fixed assets

Why can’t I dispose of this asset?

If the asset has been depreciated for the financial year in which you are processing the disposal, and this depreciation was calculated in Xero prior to 22 September 2015, you might need to roll back depreciation before disposing of the asset.

If you select to reverse all or some of that depreciation when disposing it, you’ll need to follow these steps.

  1. Roll back depreciation on all assets for a portion of the asset’s life.
    • If you’re intending to dispose of the asset with no depreciation, then roll back to the month the asset was purchased or the beginning of the financial year (whichever is most recent).
    • If you’re intending to dispose of the asset with depreciation to an end date that will cause a depreciation reversal, then roll back to that end date.
  2. Dispose of the asset.
Dispose of or sell an asset
  3. Run depreciation back to the most recent month.
Run depreciation on registered fixed assets

Why is my asset not depreciating?

If the asset was added after 22 September 2015, it may be because the asset type used is set to the default of no depreciation as the depreciation method. To fix this, edit the asset to update the depreciation details.
