Choose settings for your Simpler BAS

Select the frequency and basis for your activity statement, if you’re using the Simpler BAS reporting method for GST. You’ll need the Adviser or Standard + All Reports user role to access these settings.

From August 2017, we’ll ask you to select the Simpler BAS or Full BAS method the next time you open your activity statement. Talk to your accountant or bookkeeper if you're unsure what settings you need to be using.

This page explains how to change your activity statement settings if you use Simpler BAS. If you use Full BAS, you choose your activity statement settings in the Financial Settings screen.

Choose Simpler BAS settings for the first time

  1. In the Reports menu, select All Reports.
  2. Under Tax, click Activity Statement.

  3. Under Activity Statement Reporting Method, select Simpler BAS and click Save & continue.
  4. Select your:
    • GST Calculation Period - this determines the frequency that Xero displays GST labels on the activity statement.
    • GST Accounting Method – choose Cash or Accrual, depending on your organisation’s GST registration. Your choice determines whether transactions are included in your activity statement based on payment date (cash basis), or invoice or transaction date (accruals basis).
    • PAYG Withholding Period - this determines the frequency that Xero displays PAYG tax withheld labels on the activity statement.
    • PAYG Income Tax Method - this determines the frequency that Xero displays PAYG income tax labels on the activity statement.
    • Additional obligations - select any additional labels that apply to your business.
  5. Click Save & continue.
If you previously confirmed you use the Full BAS or Instalments reporting method, access Simpler BAS from Financial Settings instead.

Click Select reporting period to open your activity statement.

Click date and select activity statement from drop menu

Activity statement types and settings

The activity statement that Xero generates is based on your GST and PAYG withholding reporting frequency. For example:

  • Monthly PAYGW but quarterly GST – the activity statement displays PAYG withheld only for the first and second month of the quarter, and both PAYG withheld and GST for the last month.
  • Monthly PAYGW and GST – the activity statement displays both PAYG withheld and GST for each month.
